Tony Allen is a Afrobeat and Reggae act. Their sound grew out of Moritz von Oswald, Jimi Tenor, Baaba Maal, Res and Antibalas. Those roots explain a lot about how Tony Allen arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Fela Kuti, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Ebo Taylor, Manu Dibango and The Souljazz Orchestra, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Bantu, Dele Sosimi, Honeyglaze, Amadou & Mariam and Fela Kuti, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 63 connections around Tony Allen, reaching back through Moritz von Oswald and forward to Bantu.
