Almendra is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of The Beatles. Those roots explain a lot about how Almendra arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Luis Alberto Spinetta, Serú Girán, Sui Generis, La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros and Spinetta y los Socios del Desierto, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Captain Murphy and Pescado Rabioso, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 21 connections around Almendra, reaching back through The Beatles and forward to Captain Murphy. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Almendra was an Argentine Rock band from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Led by guitarist and lyricist Luis Alberto Spinetta, Almendra released between 1968 and 1971 a few singles and two albums – Almendra and Almendra II – that revolutionized the sound of Argentine rock for the remainder of the 20th century and almost single-handedly changed the way local rock music was perceived by critics and audiences. Widely compared to The Beatles by their local contemporaries, Almendra did not survive the 1960s and the making of a planned rock opera, though all individual members went on to form the backbone of Argentine rock in the 1970s.
