Sumo is a Reggae act. Their sound grew out of XTC, The Fall, Joy Division, Wire and A Certain Ratio. Those roots explain a lot about how Sumo arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota, Divididos, Viejas Locas, Pappo's Blues and Las Pelotas, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Las Pelotas, Divididos, Soda Stereo and Carajo, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 32 connections around Sumo, reaching back through XTC and forward to Las Pelotas. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
