◇ image via WikipediaCount Basie
Count Basie is a Jazz act. Their sound grew out of Earl Hines, Curtis Fuller, Wallace Davenport, Jimmy Rushing and Pinetop Smith. Those roots explain a lot about how Count Basie arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Fats Waller, Dizzy Gillespie and Oscar Peterson, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Jeffrey Osborne, Georgie Fame, Sir Duke, Darius Rucker and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 71 connections around Count Basie, reaching back through Earl Hines and forward to Jeffrey Osborne.
