Asleep at the Wheel is a Country act. Their sound grew out of Steve Wariner, The Blasters, Brooks & Dunn, John Hiatt and Béla Fleck. They run in the same orbit as Bob Wills, Hank Thompson, Junior Brown, Wayne Hancock and The Statler Brothers, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Diamond Rio, Dolly Parton, Rosie Flores, Bob Dylan and The Blind Boys of Alabama, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation.
