◇ image via WikipediaLouis Armstrong
Louis Armstrong is a Jazz act. Their sound grew out of Billy Taylor, June Christy, Original Dixieland Jass Band, Trixie Smith and La Vie en Rose. Those roots explain a lot about how Louis Armstrong arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Peggy Lee and Coleman Hawkins, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Billie Holiday, Louis Prima, John Dankworth, Dave Bartholomew and No Surprises, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 118 connections around Louis Armstrong, reaching back through Billy Taylor and forward to Billie Holiday.
