Dawn Penn is a Reggae act. Their sound grew out of Mark Bedford, Chaka Demus & Pliers and Steely & Clevie. Those roots explain a lot about how Dawn Penn arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Wailing Souls, Sister Nancy, The Frightnrs, The Viceroys and Billy Boyo, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Music of the Sun, Damian Marley, Stephen Marley, Eve and MIMS, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 36 connections around Dawn Penn, reaching back through Mark Bedford and forward to Music of the Sun.
