311 is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Jimmie's Chicken Shack, Elephunk, Colin Brittain, Hugh Padgham and Dawn Penn. Those roots explain a lot about how 311 arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Pepper, Incubus, The Expendables, Sublime and Sugar Ray, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Blake Lewis, Charlie Brown Jr., G. Love & Special Sauce, O.A.R. and Something Corporate, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 77 connections around 311, reaching back through Jimmie's Chicken Shack and forward to Blake Lewis. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
