Sister Nancy is a Dancehall act. Their sound grew out of Brigadier Jerry, General Echo, Yellowman, Winston Riley and Purpleman. Those roots explain a lot about how Sister Nancy arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Billy Boyo, Tenor Saw, Yellowman, The Frightnrs and Wailing Souls, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Lady Saw, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, RDX, Sister Carol and Lady G, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 42 connections around Sister Nancy, reaching back through Brigadier Jerry and forward to Lady Saw.
