◇ image via WikipediaThe Drifters
The Drifters is a House and Rhythm and blues act. Their sound grew out of Cynthia Weil, Doc Pomus, Leiber-Stoller, Mickey Baker and Bert Berns. Those roots explain a lot about how The Drifters arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Everly Brothers, Bobby Vee, The Four Tops, Fats Domino and The Chiffons, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Cissy Houston, Dion DiMucci, Otis Rush, John Mellencamp and La Isla Bonita, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 66 connections around The Drifters, reaching back through Cynthia Weil and forward to Cissy Houston.
