Cissy Houston is a Disco and Gospel act. Their catalogue also touches House and Rhythm and blues. Their sound grew out of Solomon Burke, Ben E. King, The Drifters, Doris Troy and Kai Winding. Those roots explain a lot about how Cissy Houston arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Latimore, Whitney Houston, Cheryl Lynn, The Five Stairsteps and The Stylistics, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick, Dee Dee Warwick, Chaka Khan and Jennifer Holliday, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 57 connections around Cissy Houston, reaching back through Solomon Burke and forward to Whitney Houston. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
