Duffy is a Blues and House act. Their catalogue also touches Pop and Rhythm and blues. Their sound grew out of Estelle, The Courteeners, Mint Royale, Paloma Faith and Al Green. Those roots explain a lot about how Duffy arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Joss Stone, Rebecca Ferguson, Emeli Sandé, Gabriella Cilmi and Leona Lewis, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Lessons to Be Learned, Candice Glover, The Fate of Ophelia, I Got a Boy and Mama Do, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 54 connections around Duffy, reaching back through Estelle and forward to Lessons to Be Learned.
