Des'ree is a Rhythm and blues act. Their sound grew out of Maxine Nightingale, Roachford and Imagination. Those roots explain a lot about how Des'ree arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Lighthouse Family, Jennifer Paige, Lisa Stansfield, All Saints and Donna Lewis, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Laura Mvula, Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, B'Day and Terence Trent D'Arby, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 40 connections around Des'ree, reaching back through Maxine Nightingale and forward to Laura Mvula.
