◇ image via WikipediaSam Smith
Sam Smith is a Contemporary R&B and House act. Their catalogue also touches Pop and Rhythm and blues. Their sound grew out of Emma Louise, Lady Gaga, Adele, Whitney Houston and Beyoncé. Those roots explain a lot about how Sam Smith arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as JP Cooper, James Arthur, James Bay, Calum Scott and Jessie J, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Ed Sheeran, Adele, Eminem, Duncan Laurence and Elnur Hüseynov, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 89 connections around Sam Smith, reaching back through Emma Louise and forward to Ed Sheeran.
