Eva Cassidy is a Blues and Jazz act. Their sound grew out of Sounds of Silence, What a Wonderful World, Chuck Brown, Sandy Denny and The Neville Brothers. Those roots explain a lot about how Eva Cassidy arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Jennifer Warnes, Madeleine Peyroux, Tracy Chapman, Dominique Fils-Aimé and Malia, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Naomi Sharon, Alice Russell, Katie Melua, Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 19 connections around Eva Cassidy, reaching back through Sounds of Silence and forward to Naomi Sharon. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Eva Marie Cassidy was an American singer and musician. She was known for her interpretations of jazz, folk, and blues music, sung with a powerful, emotive soprano voice. In 1992 she released her first album, The Other Side, a set of duets with go-go musician Chuck Brown, followed by a 1996 live solo album titled Live at Blues Alley. Although she had been honored by the Washington Area Music Association, she was virtually unknown outside her native Washington, D.C. area at the time of her death from melanoma at the age of 33 in 1996.
