Tracy Chapman is a Blues and House act. Their catalogue also touches Pop and Rap. Their sound grew out of John Parish, Gaby Moreno, Majek Fashek, Get Up, Stand Up and Change the World. Those roots explain a lot about how Tracy Chapman arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Eva Cassidy, Indigo Girls, Jennifer Warnes, Joan Armatrading and Tanita Tikaram, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Alanis Morissette, Black Pumas, Our Version of Events, The Durutti Column and Blondshell, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 57 connections around Tracy Chapman, reaching back through John Parish and forward to Alanis Morissette.
