Grouper is a Ambient act. Their sound grew out of Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, His Name Is Alive and Cocteau Twins. Those roots explain a lot about how Grouper arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Midwife, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Tim Hecker, Windy & Carl and Natural Snow Buildings, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Xiu Xiu, Drowse, Julia Holter and Mk.gee, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 29 connections around Grouper, reaching back through Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and forward to Xiu Xiu.
