Jesu

Jesu is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Eluvium, This Will Destroy You, dälek, My Bloody Valentine and Pink Floyd. Those roots explain a lot about how Jesu arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Planning for Burial, True Widow, Rosetta, Midwife and Cult of Luna, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Oathbreaker, Yakuza, Alcest, Planning for Burial and Iroha, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 31 connections around Jesu, reaching back through Eluvium and forward to Oathbreaker. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Jesu are a British experimental metal band formed in 2003 by Justin Broadrick following the breakup of his band Godflesh. It shares its name with the last song on Hymns, the final album of Godflesh's initial run. Jesu's sound is heavily layered and textured, incorporating a diverse mix of influences. Broadrick himself has stated that "...it's very loosely speaking pop/rock/metal/electronica ... I'm intentionally writing what I consider to be coherent 'pop' songs".
