Lucky Dube is a Reggae act. Their sound grew out of Mutabaruka, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Those roots explain a lot about how Lucky Dube arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Duane Stephenson, Ijahman Levi, Tarrus Riley, Gregory Isaacs and Beres Hammond, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Shanachie Records and Patoranking, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 30 connections around Lucky Dube, reaching back through Mutabaruka and forward to Shanachie Records.
