Maxwell is a House act. Their sound grew out of Rose Royce, Kate Bush, Nine Inch Nails, Al Green and Kraak & Smaak. Those roots explain a lot about how Maxwell arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Musiq, D'Angelo, Raheem DeVaughn, Amel Larrieux and Donell Jones, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo, Charlie Sexton, Channel Orange and Erykah Badu, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 43 connections around Maxwell, reaching back through Rose Royce and forward to Lauryn Hill.
