McCoy Tyner is a Jazz act. Their sound grew out of Eric Harland, Al Foster, Ahmad Jamal, Chick Corea and Marcus Miller. Those roots explain a lot about how McCoy Tyner arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Hank Mobley, Horace Silver and Wynton Kelly, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Oscar Peterson Trio, Karate, Eddie Palmieri, Gary Bartz and Rodney Franklin, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 36 connections around McCoy Tyner, reaching back through Eric Harland and forward to Oscar Peterson Trio.
