Weather Report is a Jazz and Rock act. Their sound grew out of Siedah Garrett, Sidney Bechet, Steve Lacy, Omar Hakim and Return to Forever. Those roots explain a lot about how Weather Report arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham, Chick Corea and Jean-Luc Ponty, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Butcher Brown, Galaxy 2 Galaxy, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever and Pyotr Mamonov, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 52 connections around Weather Report, reaching back through Siedah Garrett and forward to Butcher Brown. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
