◇ image via WikipediaKool & The Gang
Kool & The Gang is a Funk and House act. Their catalogue also touches Jazz and Rhythm and blues. Their sound grew out of Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders and Leon Thomas. Those roots explain a lot about how Kool & The Gang arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Shalamar, Brothers Johnson, The Whispers, Imagination and Ohio Players, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jimmy Cliff, Van Halen, Michael Jackson and Elton John, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 73 connections around Kool & The Gang, reaching back through Thelonious Monk and forward to Red Hot Chili Peppers.
