MFSB is a Rhythm and blues act. Their sound grew out of The Ebonys, Tom Moulton, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, The O'Jays and The Stylistics. Those roots explain a lot about how MFSB arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Jones Girls, First Choice, Crown Heights Affair, McFadden & Whitehead and Dexter Wansel, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Three Degrees, The Four Tops, The Salsoul Orchestra, Instant Funk and VST & Company, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 51 connections around MFSB, reaching back through The Ebonys and forward to The Three Degrees.
