Pennywise is a Hardcore punk act. Their sound grew out of Unwritten Law, Dick Dale, The Offspring, Brett Gurewitz and Circle Jerks. Those roots explain a lot about how Pennywise arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as NOFX, Lagwagon, No Use for a Name, Bad Religion and No Fun at All, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Blink-182, The Offspring, M. Shadows, The Vandals and All Killer, No Filler, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 55 connections around Pennywise, reaching back through Unwritten Law and forward to Blink-182. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
