Percy Mayfield is a Blues and Rhythm and blues act. Their sound grew out of Charles Brown. Those roots explain a lot about how Percy Mayfield arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Ivory Joe Hunter, Chuck Willis, Jimmy Witherspoon, Big Joe Turner and Bo Diddley, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Sonny Rhodes, Herman Brood & His Wild Romance, Sade Adu, Fiona Apple and Walter Trout, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 27 connections around Percy Mayfield, reaching back through Charles Brown and forward to Sonny Rhodes. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
