Blues

Roosevelt Sykes is a Blues act. Their sound grew out of Victoria Spivey, Fred Below, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Big Joe Williams. Those roots explain a lot about how Roosevelt Sykes arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Jimmy Witherspoon, Johnny Shines, Leroy Carr, Big Joe Turner and Sleepy John Estes, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Eddie Boyd, Junior Parker, Sugar Blue, The Honeydrippers and Big Maceo Merriweather, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 29 connections around Roosevelt Sykes, reaching back through Victoria Spivey and forward to Eddie Boyd. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
