Chuck Willis

Blues
Blues

Chuck Willis is a Blues act. Their sound grew out of Ma Rainey, Dave Bartholomew and Fats Domino. Those roots explain a lot about how Chuck Willis arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Big Joe Turner, Ivory Joe Hunter, The Drifters, Percy Mayfield and Larry Williams, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Otis Redding, Elvis Presley, Conway Twitty, The Band and Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 34 connections around Chuck Willis, reaching back through Ma Rainey and forward to Otis Redding. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
