Rock

Peter Hammill is a Rock act. Their sound grew out of Premiata Forneria Marconi and Jimi Hendrix. Those roots explain a lot about how Peter Hammill arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Steve Hackett, Robert Fripp, King Crimson, Genesis and Matching Mole, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Alice, Peter Gabriel, Herbert Grönemeyer, Godbluff and Soft Cell, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 36 connections around Peter Hammill, reaching back through Premiata Forneria Marconi and forward to Alice.
