Red Velvet

Red Velvet is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Girls' Generation, Ejae, I Believe I Can Fly, Yoo Young-jin and Atlantis Princess. Those roots explain a lot about how Red Velvet arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Wendy, Irene, Joy, f(x) and GOT the beat, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Rei, aespa, TAEYONG, Henry and NCT, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 40 connections around Red Velvet, reaching back through Girls' Generation and forward to Rei. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Red Velvet (Korean: 레드벨벳) is a South Korean girl group formed and managed by SM Entertainment. They originally debuted on August 1, 2014, with the single "Happiness" with the four-member line-up of Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, and Joy. A fifth member, Yeri, joined in March 2015, following the release of their first extended play, the chart-topping Ice Cream Cake. Sonically, the music of Red Velvet reflects their group name: their predominantly-pop "red" side experiments occasionally with electronic and funk, while their "velvet" side focuses on '90s-influenced R&B with elements of ballad and hip hop.
