Rokia Traoré is a World music act. Their sound grew out of John Parish, Boubacar Traoré, Pamela Badjogo, Ballaké Sissoko and Ali Farka Touré. Those roots explain a lot about how Rokia Traoré arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Cheikh Lô, Orchestra Baobab, Amadou & Mariam, Toumani Diabaté and Geoffrey Oryema, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Salif Keita, Angelique Kidjo and Damon Albarn, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 24 connections around Rokia Traoré, reaching back through John Parish and forward to Salif Keita.
