Salif Keita

Salif Keita is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Richard Bona, Rokia Traoré, Ibrahim Maalouf and Barbara Kanam. Those roots explain a lot about how Salif Keita arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Rokia Traoré, Boubacar Traoré, Orchestra Baobab, Toumani Diabaté and Cheikh Lô, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Africando, Victor Démé, Osunlade, Kery James and Mory Kanté, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 38 connections around Salif Keita, reaching back through Richard Bona and forward to Africando. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
