Seasick Steve is a Blues act. Their sound grew out of My Baby, Tommy Johnson, Lightnin' Hopkins, Son House and John Lee Hooker. Those roots explain a lot about how Seasick Steve arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Popa Chubby, Otis Taylor, Lucky Peterson, Daniel Norgren and Tony Joe White, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Modest Mouse, Kathleen Hanna, Crystal Grass, Mike Love and King Harvest, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 29 connections around Seasick Steve, reaching back through My Baby and forward to Modest Mouse.
