Shirley Collins

Shirley Collins is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Jean Ritchie, Bessie Jones, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Bert Jansch. Those roots explain a lot about how Shirley Collins arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Steeleye Span, The Pentangle, Bert Jansch, Fairport Convention and Roy Harper, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Billy Bragg, Colin Meloy and Johnny Flynn, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 22 connections around Shirley Collins, reaching back through Jean Ritchie and forward to Billy Bragg. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Shirley Elizabeth Collins MBE is an English folk singer who was a significant contributor to the British Folk Revival of the 1960s and 1970s. She often performed and recorded with her sister Dolly, whose accompaniment on piano and portative organ created unique settings for Shirley's plain, austere singing style.
