◇ image via WikipediaToots and the Maytals
Toots and the Maytals is a Reggae and Ska act. Their sound grew out of Manu Chao, Gentleman, Coxsone Dodd, Marcia Griffiths and Rachael Yamagata. Those roots explain a lot about how Toots and the Maytals arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Ethiopians, Desmond Dekker & The Aces, Peter Tosh, Derrick Morgan and The Slickers, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Bonnie Raitt, Kortatu, Amy Winehouse, Sean Paul and Island Records, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 66 connections around Toots and the Maytals, reaching back through Manu Chao and forward to Bonnie Raitt.
