Skip James

Blues
Blues

Skip James is a Blues act. Their sound grew out of J.B. Lenoir, Kansas Joe McCoy, Son House, Mississippi John Hurt and Lonnie Johnson. Those roots explain a lot about how Skip James arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Bukka White, Son House, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Rev. Gary Davis and Robert Johnson, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Bukka White, Hugo, 22-20s, Blick Bassy and Pokey LaFarge, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 37 connections around Skip James, reaching back through J.B. Lenoir and forward to Bukka White. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Nehemiah Curtis "Skip" James was an American Delta blues singer, guitarist, pianist and songwriter. AllMusic stated: "Coupling an oddball guitar tuning set against eerie, falsetto vocals, James' early recordings could make the hair stand up on the back of your neck."
