Blues

Johnny Shines is a Blues act. Their sound grew out of Mississippi Fred McDowell and Robert Johnson. Those roots explain a lot about how Johnny Shines arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Mississippi Fred McDowell, Rev. Gary Davis, Skip James, Son House and Bukka White, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Robert Lockwood Jr., Willie Dixon, Big Walter Horton, Sugar Blue and Snooky Pryor, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 26 connections around Johnny Shines, reaching back through Mississippi Fred McDowell and forward to Robert Lockwood Jr..
