Smile is a Progressive rock and Psychedelic rock act. Their catalogue also touches Rock. Their sound grew out of Pink Floyd, The Troggs, Ginger Baker and Peter Bjorn and John. Those roots explain a lot about how Smile arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Cross, Queen & David Bowie, Wings, Joan Jett and Badfinger, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Cross and Queen, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 24 connections around Smile, reaching back through Pink Floyd and forward to The Cross. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
