◇ image via WikipediaThe Clark Sisters
The Clark Sisters is a Gospel act. Their sound grew out of Richard Smallwood, Donald Lawrence, Bebe & Cece Winans, Mahalia Jackson and The Staple Singers. Those roots explain a lot about how The Clark Sisters arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Kierra Sheard, Mary Mary, Byron Cage, Donnie McClurkin and Karen Clark Sheard, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Donald Lawrence, BeBe Winans, Kierra Sheard, Faith Evans and Mary J. Blige, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 54 connections around The Clark Sisters, reaching back through Richard Smallwood and forward to Donald Lawrence.
