SWV is a Rhythm and blues act. Their sound grew out of VCHA, Les McCann, Tyrone Davis, Eric Clapton and Jennifer Holliday. Those roots explain a lot about how SWV arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Kut Klose, Mary J. Blige, Mint Condition, Zhané and Donell Jones, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Bell Biv DeVoe, Salt-N-Pepa, Xscape, LeToya Luckett and Destiny Fulfilled, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 81 connections around SWV, reaching back through VCHA and forward to Bell Biv DeVoe.
