Mahalia Jackson is a Gospel act. Their sound grew out of Oscar Brown Jr., Memphis Slim, Candi Staton, Big Maybelle and Crying in the Chapel. Those roots explain a lot about how Mahalia Jackson arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Ray Charles, Mavis Staples, Sarah Vaughan and Roberta Flack, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Faith Hill, Little Richard, Fantasia Barrino, Emotions and Della Reese, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 67 connections around Mahalia Jackson, reaching back through Oscar Brown Jr. and forward to Faith Hill.
