The New Year

The New Year is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Codeine and Bedhead. Those roots explain a lot about how The New Year arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Bedhead, Idaho, Codeine, The For Carnation and Seam, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Pedro the Lion and Band of Horses, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 26 connections around The New Year, reaching back through Codeine and forward to Pedro the Lion. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

The New Year is an American indie rock band that formed in 1999. The band was started by former Bedhead members Matt and Bubba Kadane. They released their first album in 2001, Newness Ends, which like their following albums was recorded with Steve Albini. The End Is Near (2004) and The New Year (2008) followed, with both being received positively by music critics at Pitchfork and AllMusic. In February 2017, the band announced their first album in nine years, Snow, which was released on April 28, 2017.
