The Vaselines is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Divine, Belle and Sebastian, Young Marble Giants and Mudhoney. Those roots explain a lot about how The Vaselines arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Pixies, Camera Obscura, The Halo Benders, Throwing Muses and The Primitives, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Dum Dum Girls, Hormoaning, Isn't Anything, Nirvana and Belle and Sebastian, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 27 connections around The Vaselines, reaching back through Divine and forward to Dum Dum Girls. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
