The Vines is a Rap act. Their sound grew out of I'm Only Sleeping, Wolfmother, Jet, Nirvana and You Am I. Those roots explain a lot about how The Vines arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Von Bondies, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Dirty Pretty Things, Band of Skulls and The Raconteurs, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Violent Soho, Fefe Dobson, Kisschasy, Gyroscope and OK Go, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 46 connections around The Vines, reaching back through I'm Only Sleeping and forward to Violent Soho.
