Dream pop

This Mortal Coil is a Dream pop act. Their sound grew out of Roy Harper, No Other, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Spirit and Rock City. Those roots explain a lot about how This Mortal Coil arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Cocteau Twins, Cranes, His Name Is Alive, Autumn's Grey Solace and Harold Budd, Simon Raymonde, Robin Guthrie & Elizabeth Fraser, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Piano Magic, Breathless, Exit Planet Dust, Lykke Li and The Chemical Brothers, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 32 connections around This Mortal Coil, reaching back through Roy Harper and forward to Piano Magic. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
