Alternative TV is a Punk rock act. Their sound grew out of Spirit, Generation X, Throbbing Gristle and The Adverts. Those roots explain a lot about how Alternative TV arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Sham 69, Public Image Ltd., Au Pairs, Rollins Band and Dead Boys, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Squeeze, Psychic TV, Chelsea and The Chameleons, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 22 connections around Alternative TV, reaching back through Spirit and forward to Squeeze.
