Squeeze

Squeeze is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Alternative TV, Dire Straits, Ace, Roxy Music and The Soft Boys. Those roots explain a lot about how Squeeze arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, The Jam and The Undertones, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Bruce Hornsby & the Range, Paul Carrack, Fountains of Wayne, Big Head Todd and the Monsters and Aimee Mann, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 51 connections around Squeeze, reaching back through Alternative TV and forward to Bruce Hornsby & the Range. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Squeeze are an English rock band that came to prominence in the United Kingdom during the new wave period of the late 1970s, and continued recording in the 1980s, 1990s and 2010s. In the UK, their singles "Cool for Cats", "Up the Junction", and "Labelled with Love" were top-ten chart hits. Though not as commercially successful in the United States, Squeeze had American hits with "Tempted", "Black Coffee in Bed", and "Hourglass", and were considered a part of the Second British Invasion.
