Big Joe Williams is a Blues act. Their sound grew out of Victoria Spivey, Sonny Terry, Delmark Records, Robert Pete Williams and Arhoolie Records. Those roots explain a lot about how Big Joe Williams arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Bukka White, Skip James, Son House, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Johnny Shines, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, Robert Nighthawk, Bob Dylan, Victoria Spivey and Lonnie Johnson, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 42 connections around Big Joe Williams, reaching back through Victoria Spivey and forward to The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan.
