Big Pun is a Boom bap act. Their sound grew out of Brenda Russell, Carl Thomas, Onyx, Tony Sunshine and Kool G Rap. Those roots explain a lot about how Big Pun arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Big L, Gang Starr, Mobb Deep, Kool G Rap and DMX, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into dead prez, Remy Ma, Snow Tha Product, The Beatnuts and A$AP Twelvyy, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 51 connections around Big Pun, reaching back through Brenda Russell and forward to dead prez. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
