Delain

Delain is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Epica, Within Temptation, Marko Hietala, Cryoshell and Marco Hietala. Those roots explain a lot about how Delain arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Xandria, Within Temptation, Sirenia, Ad Infinitum and Epica, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Kamelot, Battle Beast, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica and Xandria, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 33 connections around Delain, reaching back through Epica and forward to Kamelot. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Delain is a Dutch symphonic metal band formed in 2002 by keyboardist Martijn Westerholt. After his departure from Within Temptation in 2001, Westerholt formed Delain the following year, intending for the band to be solely a project, but stopped after the release of one demo. In 2005, Westerholt restarted Delain alongside singer Charlotte Wessels, and released the debut studio album, Lucidity, in September 2006. The band began to perform publicly following the positive reception the album received.
